What this actually means
GIF is a thirty-five-year-old format with a 256-colour palette and no sound, and it survives because it plays inline in places a video will not. That is the whole reason to make one: a reaction that autoplays in a chat window, a documentation page, an email. Understanding what you are trading gets you a better result than any quality setting will.
The decisions that matter are duration, frame rate and width, in that order. Two seconds at twelve frames per second and 480 pixels wide is a file people will actually load. Six seconds at thirty frames per second and 1080 wide is a file measured in tens of megabytes that most chat clients will refuse to animate at all — technically a GIF, practically a broken image.
What goes wrong
Banding is the surprise. Anything with a smooth gradient — a sunset, a colour-graded interior, a soft studio backdrop — has to be squeezed into 256 colours, and the result is visible steps where there was a smooth ramp. Clips with flat graphics, bold colour and hard edges survive the conversion far better, so pick the segment with that in mind rather than picking the prettiest one.
Silence is the trap, and it catches people constantly. A Reel whose joke is in the audio becomes a GIF with no joke, because the format has no audio track to carry it. If the sound is the content, a GIF is the wrong output entirely and a short muted video clip is what you actually want — this page's own Frame and Reframe modes will get you there.
