Instagram fonts: what each style is missing

What this actually means

There are hundreds of Instagram font generators and they all produce the same characters, because they are all reading the same Unicode tables. What almost none of them tell you is where those tables have holes — which style silently leaves your numbers unstyled, which one cannot handle an accented name, which one is missing two letters of the alphabet outright.

The table above was produced by measurement rather than by looking things up. On the date shown, each character class was pushed through the exact function this site's generator ships, one code point at a time, and counted as mapped only when the output actually differed from the input. That is why it can name the two lower-case letters small caps has no glyph for instead of guessing at them.

What goes wrong

The single most useful thing on this page is the digits column. Only two of these six styles have real digits, so any line containing a year, a price, a follower count or a discount code comes out half-converted in the other four — and it reads as a broken font rather than as a design decision. If your text has numbers in it, that column narrows your choice from six styles to two before you look at anything else.

None of these styles are indexed as the words they appear to spell. Instagram matches the characters you typed, and a styled letter is a different character from a plain one, so a bio written entirely in a fancy style is invisible to a search for the words it appears to say. The rule that follows is simple: keep what you do in plain text, and spend the styling on the lines nobody searches for.
