What this actually means
A profile photo is the only Instagram asset where the shape you upload and the shape people see are different. You hand over a square; the app draws a circle inscribed in it. Every pixel outside that circle exists in the file, is never displayed anywhere in the product, and is therefore wasted composition — about a fifth of the image you carefully chose.
That is why “what size is an Instagram profile picture” is a slightly wrong question. Upload big and square, because a big square gives the mask enough resolution to stay sharp on a high-density screen. Then compose for the circle, because the circle is the only part anyone will ever see. Those are two separate decisions and only the second one is under your control after you tap upload.
What goes wrong
Corners are where faces go to die. A portrait cropped so that a shoulder or a hat brim reaches a corner of the square loses it entirely, and the loss is not symmetric with what you saw in your photo editor — a rectangular preview flatters exactly the region the mask deletes. Put the subject in the middle sixty per cent and you will never be surprised by the result.
Legibility at very small sizes is the other half of the job. A profile photo is rendered tiny almost everywhere it appears — next to a comment, in a Story ring, in a search result — so fine detail, thin type and a busy background all turn to mush at the size that actually matters. Test yours by shrinking it to about the width of your thumbnail before you decide; if it is unreadable there, it is unreadable in the product.
